Resident Evil 5 (TBA)

With Resident Evil 4 starting production soon, Screen Gems seems to be striking when the franchise is still hot. There are plans for a 5th film with the working title "Resident Evil Begins". This time it will be more of a reboot than a sequel. Focusing on a special military unit who are sent in to fight a, powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident. If this sounds like the original film, that's the point. The difference will be that Milla Jovovich and her character Alice will not be involved. The idea of the whole reboot is to allow Milla Jovovich to leave the series while still being able to make more installments. I expect Paul W.S. Anderson to keep playing a big role in the productions to come.

I expect characters such as Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield to be the focus, if they don't make the fourth installment. One of the big complaints from Capcom and Resident Evil fans is that films are different from the game's stories. I assume that the 5th film could also focus on the events of Resident Evil 5 or any of the other popular installments. I'd love to see a Resident Evil film set in Africa.

There are many genre directors that could do the material justice. Directors who I could see taking over the franchise include, Alexandre Aja (Piraha), Christopher Smith (Severance) and Michael J. Bassett (Solomon Kane).
