Riddick (2011)

The third film Riddick will see both star Vin Diesel return along with writer/director David Twohy. It's been long talked about bringing back the series to it's original roots. This would mean more suspense and smaller budget. I'm sure Twohy understood why Chronicles of Riddick didn't seem to work when it was originally released. They tried to make an epic film which didn't fit the character very well. We should expect a back to basics, gritty and violent science-fiction-action flick. I am a fan of the franchise and it's Vin Diesel's best character. I believe the reason for Riddick's comeback is in part the successful spin-off games.

The Hollywood Reporter dropped some story elements which sound similar to Pitch Black and the mercs/prison planet scenes from Chronicles. They also mention that Lionsgte will handle the interntionl distribution rights for the film. While Universal Pictures will handle domestic rights. If the production starts between now and the fall I expect to see a 2011 release.

"Though billed as a back-to-basics approach to the character popularized by Diesel, the script features the character -- the most wanted man in the galaxy -- left for dead on a barren alien planet, dealing with "trisons" (three-legged bisons) and "mud demons." He must then contend with two squads of bounty hunters, one of which ride rockets called jetcycles"

My favorite elements of the Riddick universe are the mercs, criminals and prisons. The cat and mouse relationship between the mercs and Riddick is very entertaining. Since the majority of the time he out kills or smarts them. The new film having two groups of mercs hunting Riddick set on a hostile planet sounds beyond fun.
